Quick start

This page gets you from "bot is installed" to your first translations in a few minutes. To install the bot on a server you manage, you need Discord's Manage Server permission.

1. Add the bot

Use the Add to Discord link (it's also the button on the landing page). It lets you add Low's Translator either to your account (so it works everywhere you do, in any server, DM, or group chat, even where the bot isn't a member) or to a server you manage. Adding it to a server needs Discord's Manage Server permission, and you should make sure the bot has permission to:

  • Read Messages / View Channels and Send Messages in the channels you want.
  • Manage Webhooks, required for channel auto-translate (it reposts messages as the author via a webhook).
  • Read Message History, for flag-reaction and right-click translation.
  • Manage Messages, only needed if you turn on "Delete original" so the bot can remove a message after auto-translating it.

The "Add the bot to a server" button on your dashboard already requests all of these.

Reaction-to-translate and channel auto-translate are message-content features. If they don't seem to work on your server, the feature may not be enabled there. Ask whoever manages the bot, or check the server's settings on the dashboard.

2. Set your language

Run /setlanguage and pick the language you want messages translated into. This is saved to your account and used by the right-click Translate command and your personal reaction emoji everywhere the bot is present.

You can also set it from the dashboard (Settings → Translation → Translation language) or review and change all your personal settings in Discord with /settings.

3. Translate a message

Three ways, any time:

  • Right-click a message → Apps → Translate. The translation is shown only to you (ephemeral), in your saved language.
  • /translate. Type text, choose a target language, and optionally a source and a per-message engine. The result is posted publicly in the channel.
  • React with a country flag 🇫🇷🇩🇪🇯🇵. The bot posts a public translation into that flag's language, if flag reactions are enabled on the server. Or react with your personal emoji to get a translation DMed to you.

4. Turn on channel auto-translate (optional)

On the dashboard, open Auto-translate, pick a server you manage, choose a channel and a target language, and add it. From then on, every new message in that channel is reposted translated, as the original author. Edits sync automatically.

Prefer to stay in Discord? Run /autotranslate add in the server (needs Manage Server); it does the same thing, and /serverconfig opens an interactive panel for the rest of a server's settings.

By default, new servers use the OpenAI engine for auto-translate, which is unlimited and doesn't draw down your character cap. You can change this per server on the Servers page or in /serverconfig.

5. Check your usage

Open the dashboard Overview for your gauge (characters used against your monthly cap) and Usage for charts over time. OpenAI translations are unlimited and are not counted against your cap.
